Hi friends, I’m Alice! A chocolate lab who loves long winter of snow naps and icy paw patrols, and spring is my favorite season. The air smells fresher, the sun feels warmer, and I know it’s almost time to roll around on the grass again. But before your lawn is ready for playtime, it needs a little help waking up from winter. That’s where spring clean-up and fertilization come in!
At Welch Lawn Care, spring prep is one of the most important steps we take to set lawns up for a healthy, green season, especially here in New England, where winter can be tough on turf.
When Should Spring Clean-Up Happen?
Timing is everything. In New Hampshire and throughout New England, spring clean-ups typically take place between late March and mid-April, depending on weather conditions.
You’ll want to wait until:
- Snow has fully melted.
- The lawn has dried enough to avoid rutting or compaction.
- Daytime temperatures are consistently above freezing.
Spring clean-up includes removing leftover leaves, sticks, sand, and debris that built up over winter. This lets sunlight and air reach the soil, helping grass wake up evenly and cutting down on the risk of disease.
Starting too early can damage soft, saturated turf, while waiting too long can smother grass and delay green-up.
Liming: Balancing New England Soil
New England soils tend to be acidic, especially after winter snow and rainfall. That’s why liming is often recommended in early spring.
Lime helps:
- Raise soil pH to optimal levels.
- Improve nutrient absorption efficiency
- Encourage stronger root growth.
Early spring is an ideal time for liming because moisture helps it begin working its way into the soil before peak growing season. Soil testing is the best way to determine whether your lawn truly needs lime and how much.
When to Fertilize in Spring
Fertilization should follow clean-up, usually mid-April through early May, once grass is actively growing. In our region, feeding too early can push top growth before roots are ready, which isn’t ideal.
A balanced, controlled-release fertilizer supports:
- Steady green-up
- Root development
- Recovery from winter stress
The goal is to support growth, not force it.
Preparing the Ground for a Great Season
Spring prep creates the foundation for everything that follows: mowing, weed control, and summer resilience. When clean-up, liming, and fertilization are timed correctly, lawns grow thicker, greener, and healthier all season long.
If you’re not sure when your lawn is ready, don’t worry, the team at Welch Lawn Care is always happy to help get your yard spring-ready.
